EXAAA – ‘CAN’ – ‘ALLIANCE’ to reduce food waste (and) in hotels

The accession of the Athens – Attica and Argosaronic Hotel Association to the voluntary cooperation agreement “Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste” on Thursday 18.04.2024 has a special semantic value for the hotel family. The Athens Hotel Association, which through its close cooperation with ‘We Can’, has been actively defending the message ‘no portion of food wasted – we offer it where there is a need’ since 2012, is taking another step forward, this time joining forces with ‘Alliance’, which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The signing of the Voluntary Cooperation Agreement by EXAAA welcomes and strengthens the already successful effort (

) by the cooperating parties (competent public authorities, professional and scientific bodies, food & catering companies – and related sectors, civil society organisations, universities). The aim of the Alliance is to inform, raise awareness and educate on the prevention and reduction of food waste, to highlight and disseminate good practices, to develop synergies between stakeholders, and to contribute to public policy making.

The President of EXAAA, Mrs Lambrini Karanasiu Zoulovitch stressed that “the values of the ‘Alliance’ have already been atypically supported by the Athens Hotel Association since its creation and hotels – members of the Association already participate in it. The accession of the Association itself, aspires to reinforce the message to hotels and society to prevent food waste, thus reducing organic waste ‘at source’ and of course saving & supplying food. Our goal for 2024, said Ms.Zoulovits, is to have even more hotels join the “Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste” and the “No Food Waste” certification scheme for the prevention of food waste, created by TUV Austria Hellas in strategic cooperation with Boroume.

The Coordinator of the “Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste”, Ms. Dia Chorafa , representing the ‘Can we’ coordinating the initiative, pointed out“Food waste occurs at all stages of the food value chain and is a complex issue. Effectively tackling it requires cooperation between the links in the supply chain, as well as synergies between all stakeholders. The Alliance promotes coordinated action by the State, the market, organised civil society, academia & research community. We consider the commitment of EXAAA’s contribution to this collective effort with multiplier potential to be extremely important, given that the Association has for many years already supported the objectives we have set in the Alliance”.

EXAA & ‘WE CAN’:
A long-standing relationship of service to fellow human beings.

Since 2012, Boroume has been making a daily effort to reduce food waste and increase the food supply to those who need it most in Greece today. EXAAA has been supporting this effort in Athens since the beginning of the action and since the years of the great crisis, offering to date more than 170,000 portions of food to dozens of charitable organizations either in the wider radius of the hotels participating in the program, or throughout Attica, thus showing in practice their social sensitivity, as well as a special attention to the environment – through the reduction of food waste.
