Close your eyes and imagine an island with a narrow sea channel running through it, like a small Venice, with neoclassical houses perched on the hill and lush lemon groves. Open them up! You have just arrived at Poros, the “little pass”, as its name means. On one side is its town, stately and romantic, with quaint alleys and the historic clock standing tall for nearly a century. And on the other, a green paradise filled with lemon and pine trees, healing waters and places of worship with stunning monastic architecture. Take a tour of the island’s history at the Poros Archaeological Museum in Korizi Square, and continue on to the cathedral of Agios Georgios to admire the Byzantine church’s dome, painted by Parthenis. On the other side of the canal, one of the three largest sanctuaries of Poseidon awaits you to explore it overlooking the Saronic Gulf and to the east, the unique Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi welcomes you on its feast day, Easter Friday, with its magnificent view, the precious wooden carved iconostasis from Cappadocia of M.It features a precious iconostasis of the Virgin Mary, painted by the Italian Raphael Checoli.<\/p>\n

Poros is actually made up of two islands, Sferia, where the town is located, and Kalavria, full of unique walking and cycling routes.<\/p>\n

Follow a passable path to reach the stone-built Lighthouse Dana overlooking the Saronic Gulf and Methana.<\/p>\n

Head west towards the sheltered harbour that for years hosted the Russian Naval Station and discover monasteries of unique architecture as well as the countless beaches near the town or around the island and indulge in their crystal clear waters.<\/p>\n
