The curtain opened on this year’s EKO Acropolis Rally in the most ideal way. The Athenian riviera was dressed up and the Water Square was filled with the sounds of the 69 race cars that a few hours earlier had climbed the starting ramp, in the shadow of the sacred rock of Acropolis.<\/p>\n
Water Square, then, came to take the baton from the spectacle of OAKA and Syntagma Square, creating undoubtedly a unique “series” of super specials, which writes its own history. With the extreme weather phenomena having finally subsided in the capital, the 1.48-kilometre-long seaside route vibrated with the sounds of the 4-cylinder engines and the beats of DJ Michalis Tsaousopoulos, stirring up the spectators. The fastest time was set by Kalle Rovanpera, with a difference of just 0.3 seconds. by second place Esapekka Lappi.<\/p>\n
It all started a little earlier, under the sacred rock of the Acropolis, where – given the difficult conditions prevailing in the Greek territory – the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis, and the President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, among others, gave the start to 69 crews from 31 countries.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister of Sport referred to the circumstances of the race at a difficult time for the Greek people, shortly before the start of the race, describing this year’s event as “a crack of joy and optimism for the future”.<\/p>\n
The EKO Acropolis Rally, for the second consecutive year “Sports Event of the Year” of the Sports Marketing Awards, proves in practice that it is an institution that has not rested on the laurels of 70 years of history, has not been reduced to the sterile reminiscence of past glories, but has evolved, progressed, improved and continues to innovate and surprise, earning the place it deserves in the pantheon of motor sport.<\/p>\n
