Winter has finally made its appearance, with the first snow falling in the mountains of our country. So, what could be better than a getaway to places beautiful, unique, full of Greece! Like Argos Orestiko.<\/p>\n<p>Argos Orestiko is one of the oldest municipalities with a history that starts from the Ancient Kingdom of Orestis, passes through the Diocletianopolis of Roman times and ends in modern Macedonia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>&#8221; In Argos Orestiko, nature was generously given to us, with the Aliakmonas River and its habitat,  <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>crossing it and its mountain ranges delimiting it,  <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>hiding in its forests attractive trails and waterfalls that surprise you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12870\" src=\"https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/topio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1583\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/topio.jpg 1583w, https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/topio-768x265.jpg 768w, https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/topio-1536x530.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1583px) 100vw, 1583px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was the centre of the Oreste Macedonians, whose rulers believed that they descended from the Peloponnesian city of the same name. According to tradition, it was named after Orestes, who fled to the area after the murder of his father Agamemnon. The word Argos has Peloponnesian origins and is found in many areas of Greece. Argos Orestikon was the capital of ancient Orestis, a province of Upper Macedonia. Based on archaeological data, all researchers today unreservedly identify the city with the ruins preserved at the site &#8220;Armenochori&#8221;, which is located very close to the current homonymous town.<\/p>\n<p>This heavy heritage could not leave unaffected the modern image of Argos Orestiko, which was generously gifted by nature, with the Aliakmonas River, and its habitat, crossing it and its mountainous masses delimiting it, hiding in its forests attractive routes and waterfalls that surprise you.<\/p>\n<p>In the town of Argos Orestiko, the visitor can pass through the neighborhoods of Tsifliki and Varossi, which still maintain the traditional or neoclassical architecture. There you will also see the &#8220;Evraika&#8221;, an old shopping street with preserved Jewish houses, and the &#8220;macheradika&#8221;, where the old cutlers used to make knives from sheep horns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The attractions of the area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At a distance of about 15 km from Argos Orestiko, in the area of Nostimos &#8211; Asprokklisia, there is a petrified forest, the age of which is estimated at 15-20 million years. The fossils are on display at the Museum of Palaeontology &amp; Palaeobotany in Nostimo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12868 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/iamatika-ammoudaras.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/iamatika-ammoudaras.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grtraveller.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/iamatika-ammoudaras-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The thermal baths of Ammoudara, just 2.5 km away from the city, are well known for their therapeutic properties. They operate from the beginning of June until the beginning of October.<\/p>\n<p>At the northern end of the city is the Archaeological Museum, which was inaugurated in 2010 and houses the archaeological findings of the area.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in Armenochori and Paravela, just two kilometres north of the city, one can find the walls of the Roman Diocletianople.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get to Argos Orestiko<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In essence, there are three ways in which one can visit Argos Orestiko: by plane, by bus and by car.<\/p>\n<p>Access by plane is via the Aristotelis State Airport, which is located in the town of Argos Orestiko. Flights are operated three times a week during the winter season (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday) either directly from Athens &#8220;Eleftherios Venizelos&#8221; airport (duration 65&#8242;), or with a stopover in Kozani (duration 115&#8242;).<\/p>\n<p>The Intercity Railway of the Prefecture of Kastoria connects Kastoria and Argos Orestiko with Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Ioannina, Veroia, Kozani, Larissa, Volos and Lamia.<\/p>\n<p>If you use your car, the distance between Athens and Argos Orestiko is 477 km and it will take you about six hours to cover it, using the Central Road and the Egnatia. There are three options: via Lamia, via Patras and Ioannina and via Larissa and Katerini.
