A monument that does not belong only to Athens\u2019 past. It continues to shape the way we see the city today.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see the Acropolis from countless points across Athens: from\u00a0Thissio,\u00a0Pangrati\u00a0or a rooftop in the city\u00a0centre. Its presence is so constant that it can almost disappear into everyday life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Until you stand on the rock itself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At 156\u00a0metres\u00a0above sea level, the scale changes. Modern Athens stretches around the Sacred Rock, making it clear that the Acropolis was never an isolated collection of monuments. Its history is inseparable from the city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hill was inhabited as early as the third millennium BC. During the Mycenaean period it became a\u00a0centre\u00a0of power, and from the eighth century BC onwards it\u00a0acquired\u00a0an exclusively sacred character,\u00a0centred\u00a0on the worship of Athena\u00a0Polias. The form we\u00a0recognise\u00a0today was shaped\u00a0mainly in\u00a0the fifth century BC. After the Persian destruction of 480 BC, the building\u00a0programme\u00a0of Pericles gave the rock the Parthenon, the\u00a0Propylaia, the\u00a0Erechtheion\u00a0and the Temple of Athena Nike.\u00a0<\/span> \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The Parthenon, designed by\u00a0Iktinos\u00a0and Kallikrates, with Pheidias responsible for its sculptural decoration, became the best-known monument of the complex. Yet the Acropolis is also experienced through movement: entering through the\u00a0Propylaia, discovering the asymmetry of the\u00a0Erechtheion\u00a0and the Porch of the Maidens, noticing the spaces between the buildings and watching light alter the marble.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there is the city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the rock, antiquity and contemporary Athens occupy the same field of vision. Two and a half millennia later, the Acropolis does more than make us look back.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It still changes our point of view.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
