the beginning of the ceremony, the Minister of Finance, Mr. Christos Staikouras, stating: “I congratulate you for the awards and thank you because, through difficult and exogenous crises, you not only stood up, but you highlighted the tourism product and added value to the country. Tourism is the main pillar of the economy, contributing 20% of GDP and employment. It contributes to job creation and social cohesion. The sector has been faced with multiple crises, which have raised substantial concerns about its very sustainability, but it has managed, with the help of the State, which listened to you and was close to you. Since 2019 we have reduced taxes and social security contributions. In these crises, collectively and coherently, we rose to the occasion. With modesty and foresight, we set up a safety net for tourism. Through your efforts, you achieved positive results, increasing the likelihood of exceeding the 2019 receipts. The challenges ahead. We owe it to you, as a State, to continue to be with you.”

The Deputy Minister of State for Tourism, Ms Sophia Zacharaki, she said in her speech: “We have done well, but there is no need for complacency, we have to deal with inflationary trends, the energy crisis. As the Ministry of Tourism, we have embarked on a major campaign, which does not stop. Wherever you are, you are mentioned by the channels at home and abroad. They are communicating mountain and island Greece. Greece is much more than the diptych “sun and sea”. The campaign for mountain tourism will continue. We have already passed legislative initiatives that embellish the experiences in Greece. We are moving forward with an energy upgrade programme in SMEs, a major undertaking for tourism businesses. On the initiative of the Prime Minister, for the “Tourism for All” programme, we have doubled the budget. For the problem with human resources we cannot solve it immediately, we are making a serious effort to be consistent in the work of our schools. We have added a housing allowance for students and recruited teachers at the tourism academy”.

The Minister of State for Development and Investment, Mr. John Tsakiris, noted in his speech: “Tourism remains the engine of the economy, but it must become greener and more digital, as the new NSRF demands for digital and green transition. We hope that Greek tourism businesses will be at the highest level of standards in Europe.” He added: “The records did not happen by chance. Greece has proven to be a safe country and all the investments made by businesses have now been capitalised. The State stood by the industry during the difficult years of the pandemic. As the Ministry of Development, we received over 6,500 hotel requests and disbursed funds immediately. Congratulations to the awardees and to those who contribute to this sector giving the economy these benefits.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Georgios Karagiannis, said: “The infrastructure is being modernized, the entry-exit gates in Athens, Thessaloniki, northern Greece, Crete, the Ionian and Aegean islands. A few days ago, we delivered the connection of the country’s largest port to the metro, a project that will play a catalytic role in tourism. And the international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” will be connected to the port in less than an hour. In Thessaloniki we have increased the capacity of Macedonia Airport. At the end of 2023, we will deliver the flagship metro project. Our attention is not limited to the big urban centres. Projects such as those at Syros and Chios airports, but also the emblematic one at Kastelli in Heraklion are already underway. Interventions are not limited to airports. We are proceeding with the demarcation of the port of Santorini and interventions in Corfu and Lefkada. In Kefalonia, we are intervening in the road network to get it off the map of the many traffic accidents. The mirror is also the road network, we are making a substantial effort with the E65, the BOAK, the Patras-Pyrgos road, but we are not stopping there, as we are also improving the provincial network. With €700 million of interventions. euros to change the picture on the secondary network. Tailored to national and local needs”.

Mr. Harris Theocharis, Parliamentary Representative and MP B3 South Sector and former Minister of Tourism, in his institutional greeting, said he was happy for the rave comments of the foreign press on tourism. “All this did not happen by chance, but with a lot of effort, perseverance and a secret: we supported the people of tourism in the most difficult moment they experienced. Tourism has undoubtedly been hit by perhaps the worst crisis of all time. We have stood by the people of tourism in many ways. First of all, we supported them with the whole financial support package, but, from the point of view of the Ministry of Tourism, we also stood by our partners from abroad – tour operators, cruise managers, travel agents and so on. We promised these people little, but what we promised we did, and we did, which had a political cost for us. Now that the crisis is of a different nature, it is an energy crisis, tourism supports the Greek economy with money that returns to the Greek people,” he said.

Mrs. Katerina Notopoulou, MP for Thessaloniki, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, congratulated all the professionals of the sector, who, in the midst of multiple crises, as she said, sought and succeeded in keeping the bar of Greek hospitality high. And he continued: “Our thoughts are with those businesses that are struggling to stand up. The economic wounds have not yet healed. However the economic figures shape up, we are still not sure if they will be satisfactorily spread.” Ms. Notopoulou referred to the need to intensify efforts for adequate support and financing of businesses, so that they can cope with their accumulated financial obligations, amid inflationary pressures and energy crisis. For the next day of Greek tourism, the MP recommended that it should be “based on a hierarchical plan centred on a model of sustainable development. I believe that there is still much to be done towards the development of a green and digital transition. Above all, however, the main pillar of Greek tourism must be supported, which is none other than its own people, who deserve all the awards”, she concluded. Notopoulou.

The President of the Hellenic Tourism Organisation, Mrs. Angela Gerekou, pointed out that the prospects for Greek tourism in 2023 are extremely promising, after the positive picture of 2022: the majority of Greek tourism businesses see their turnover moving upwards, travel receipts are increasing compared to 2019 and the season is lengthening. She referred to her three-year career as head of the Hellenic Tourism Organisation, which, she said, works with a creative team. “With the Ministry of Tourism we have become a team. In line with the ministry’s national strategy, EOT is acquiring a holistically digital personality, allowing all professionals to have a national portal to communicate and collaborate from every corner of Greece.” Ms. Gerekou stressed the importance of sustainable tourism, experience tourism, which invites visitors to feel like locals for a few days in the place they are visiting. “We show the Greece we would like to see in the new era. We are asking for your help in developing agrotourism, wine tourism, and we would like you to use local products of the country in your hotels. Pairing the hospitality economy with our Greek products and culture is our brand as Greece.” Finally, he made a special reference to the inclusion of seaplanes as a pole of attraction for tourists in Greece.

Dimitris Fragakis, Secretary General of the Greek Tourism Organisation, estimated that 2022 will be a landmark year for Greek tourism. “We will no longer have 2019 as a milestone year, but 2022, for two reasons: First, as Mr. Staikouras mentioned, we are expected to surpass or come very close to the 2019 tourism revenues and, secondly, because we have managed within two and a half years, after the absolute zero that tourism reached in 2020, to make a total reset. This is a great feat that could not have happened without tourism entrepreneurs and workers. They didn’t put in much effort, as they were also fewer than in any other year. I hope that we will continue with this zeal in the coming years, because the challenges are here, ahead of us,” he concluded.

It is noted that, in the context of the event, a draw for a great gift, which is one (1) course of study in the Postgraduate Programme of Tourism and Hotel Management of BCA COLLEGE, was held. The gift was handed over by Dr Christina Konstantinidou, General Manager of BCA College, at the Chios Chandris Hotel and Mr. Haris Neofytidis, Chief Operating Officer of Chandris Hotels (Hellas) SA.

Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso and LiveOn Expo Complex With the participation of leading members of the government and the opposition, as well as the most important tourism businesses in Greece, the Greek Hospitality Awards 2022 presented by QRES.
