This happened for the first time in Larissa in 1997. Since then, 21 Gavoutsmas have been held with the participation of thousands of people. The last one was held in August 2019 in Chalkida, organized by the Brotherhood of Precupiers of Chalkida *Osios Ioannis the Russian*.

Gavousmastia etymologically comes from the Turkish word Gavousmak, and in Greek it means “meeting”. It is therefore, the meeting or otherwise the gathering of the refugees from Cappadocia and the refugees from Asia Minor in general. During the three-day event, songs and dances of Cappadocia, music and dance performances, scientific conferences, theatrical events, photography exhibitions, etc. are presented in order to keep the collective historical memory and truth unquenched.

This year marks 100 years since the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the most tragic moment of the modern Greek state, which left a collective trauma in the consciousness of all Greeks. On the occasion of this tragic anniversary, the Region of Crete named 2022 as the Year of Asia Minor Hellenism and in recognition of the overall contribution of the Asia Minor refugees decided to participate as co-organiser of the 22nd Davoustima.

On 26 and 27 August at 9.00 p.m. at the theatre of Farangian Kefalas in Farangiana the first part of the 22nd Davoustima events will take place. Songs and dances of Cappadocia with the participation of dance groups from all over Greece promise a journey of memory through time. Still, we will listen to the interaction of the two cultures, Cappadocia and Crete, and the osmosis, interplay and common elements that existed between them. At the same time, there will be an exhibition of photographs by Angeliki Kitsou Magarakis of Greek Cappadocian houses. On 28 August in Apoini at 5.00 pm at “Panagia Velouliani (year 1260)” a memorial service will be held, followed by a scientific symposium on Asia Minor Hellenism, in which distinguished speakers from all over the country will take part. We hope that the 22nd Gavoussis will be the starting point for cooperation between all the refugee associations of Crete and with the support of the Region of Crete and the scientific institutions we will keep the historical memory unquenched. In addition, the collective trauma of the Asia Minor Catastrophe should be highlighted as the event from which we will draw the appropriate conclusions to proceed as Greeks in the future.

The organizers, co-organized by the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Gortys, invite the whole world to participate in the three-day event, promising to remember our ancestors refugees, while recognizing the contribution of Asia Minor Hellenism to the culture of modern Greece.

Το 22nd Cappadocian Crab Festival keeps alive the flame of memory for the 100 years of the Asia Minor disaster, for the first time in Crete, with a great celebration – tribute to the lost homeland.
