INTERVIEW OF THE REGIONAL GOVERNOR OF WESTERN GREECE NECTARIOS PHARMAKIS TO <\/strong>GRTRAVELLER<\/strong> AND ANTONIS KIRIKOS <\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

In an interview full of optimism, creation and future, the Regional Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, unfolds his vision for Western Greece and a special tour of his favourite places in grtraveller.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Region of Western Greece is a constantly growing region. What are the most important projects you have carried out so far?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

To date, 183 projects have been contracted and are being implemented, with a budget of \u20ac319.3 million. \u20ac, representing 44% of the total budget of the projects included (\u20ac725.6 million), both from the national and co-financed part. That is, one in two projects included. In addition, the total number of public projects that are integrated or operational in Western Greece, funded by the national and co-financed part and by the Fire Victims Fund, is 852. With a total budget of 1.6 billion!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another financial “package” of 40 million euro is also being prepared. around \u20ac1.5 billion was directed to important, smaller-scale infrastructure projects that improve the daily lives of citizens.<\/p>\n

For us, the start of work on the Patras – Pyrgos road stands out. The Region of Western Greece, acted as a lever of pressure and reinforcement of the just demand of the local society for a modern motorway, a powerful factor of social and economic development, but mainly a road of life to stop mourning victims.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition to roads, our priorities include urban regeneration projects in order to achieve the transformation and upgrading of settlements throughout Western Greece.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is the role of green growth in your Region?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

Our main priority is to bring Western Greece out of energy isolation. In this direction, we have taken substantial steps. The development of low and medium pressure gas networks has recently started. These investments amount to 42.3 million. euros that by 2023, come to change the energy footprint of the Region of Western Greece. We are also implementing the large cooperative photovoltaic park that we are planning on an area of 1,300 acres in the area of Messolonghi and we have also completed a complete plan for the development of electromobility, but there is something else, very important: Nineteen plans – as many as the municipalities of Western Greece – of climate change resilience. And this is very important, because one of the big issues in today’s and tomorrow’s investments is security.<\/p>\n

How do you try to overturn the <\/strong>brain<\/strong> drain<\/strong> but also attract large investments that will create jobs? <\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

The Region of Western Greece has funded with more than 4 million. euros from the Operational Programme “Western Greece 2014-2020” for the funding of research and development projects involving companies that carry out their research work in the Region of Western Greece. We also cooperate with the Ministry of Labour, in the framework of the REBRAIN WESTERN GREECE action, which aims at the technological transformation of the labour market, the halting of the brain drain phenomenon and the strengthening of human resources with advanced digital skills, as it is carried out in leading international universities. The initiative aims to link highly qualified positions and Greek scientists working abroad and at home. Another important action that we are implementing is the “Regional Labour Market Diagnostic Mechanism in the Region of Western Greece, which we are funding from OP Western Greece 2014-2020. The project promotes the anticipation of future needs for new jobs and new skills required as a consequence of economic transformation which will contribute to the design and implementation of interventions for the education of workers, vocational training, the fight against unemployment and the integration of unemployed people into the labour market in sustainable jobs.<\/p>\n

We seek to change the image of Western Greece, with projects that change the philosophy and the way we perceive development, prosperity and social cohesion. We are in a great race to make Western Greece an easy access region that can showcase all its comparative advantages.<\/p>\n

What are your priorities for the next period?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

We are focusing on substantial interventions linked to social protection and strengthening entrepreneurship, areas that have been hit hard in recent years. \u03a5<\/em>We are implementing the action “Provision of Independent Living and Safe Ageing of the Elderly in the Region of Western Greece” with a funding of 1.3 million euros, we are creating a new information hub, “koinoniapde”, an electronic platform for service, information and interactivity of all social and health services in Western Greece and we are creating a “Social Policy Coordination and Social Innovation Mechanism”, with a budget of 1.9 million euros. At the same time, we are creating tools that shape a new, interesting investment landscape in Western Greece.<\/p>\n

How has thematic tourism developed in your Region?<\/strong><\/h6>\n

We have adapted the Tourism Promotion Action Plan, forming an integrated approach to promote the tourism product of the Region of Western Greece, through the design of a specific communication strategy using specific marketing tools that contribute to the creation of a special tourist identity and the promotion of the comparative advantages of the wider region. We also use modern tools and through European programs, we provide Western Greece with applications useful to the visitor, we create thematic routes and a digital “guide”. The material is to be enhanced by the development of an integrated multimedia web platform that will allow end-users to plan their visit according to their needs, access unknown information about the routes and record their personal experience. For us, tourism is a complete travel experience that must include quality agri-food products and of course, local culinary delights.<\/p>\n

What, in your opinion, is the most beautiful part of the Region? Which areas would you recommend to a visitor?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h5>\n

I will invite you to come to Western Greece and make a small tour from the coast of Amvrakikos and the Ionian Sea to Thermos and mountainous Nafpaktia. And from there, you can cross into Achaia to go to Kalavryta and Klitoria and then to Aegio, Patras, and the area of Strofylia in Western Achaia. To end up at some of the wonderful beaches of Ilia, Ancient Olympia and the forest of Fologi. And then, you tell me which is the most beautiful spot… Although I think you’ll have a hard time choosing. Like me…<\/p>\n

What is your favourite “local” culinary delight?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h6>\n

I have a great respect for the cuisine of my home country. I’m not doing it for localistic reasons, but because I learned about the excellent roasts and the great pies of Etoloakarnania and beyond as a child. I suggest you try everything from garduba to milk pie and from pumpkin fritters to egg tarragon…<\/p>\n
