Nikolaos Lerios, teacher and president of the Association of Friends of the Environment, one of the three associations that organise Gavoussis, speaks to<\/span> grtraveller<\/span> for the event that for the 22nd time brings together Cappadocians everywhere. This year’s Gavoosis is organized on 26 – 28 August 2022 in the villages of Farangiana and Apoini of Crete, together with the Cultural Association of Apoini “The Bacites” and the Association of Victims of Sokara.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u03a4What is the Cappadocian Gabbage Patch? What is the aim of the event?<\/em><\/b> <\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

In 1997, after the cooperation of all the Cappadocian Associations, the first national meeting took place in Mandra, Larissa. Since then, every year, all the Cappadocians meet in a different place each time, in a celebration of reviving customs, presenting dances from their unforgettable homelands and meeting new Cappadocians. The sound of the music, the movements of the dancers, the humorous comments of the theatrical groups, the warmth of the people who participate and who generously share kindness, goodness and friendliness create an idyllic atmosphere so that everyone gives their dynamic “presence” with great zeal in every meeting. The remarkable thing about these meetings is the continuous communication of the people who participate and the meeting of relatives who, due to the settlement of their ancestors in different places after the Asia Minor catastrophe, did not have the opportunity of contact. Beyond the essential reasons, however, these meetings give the inhabitants of the towns and villages where they are hosted the opportunity to get to know a rich tradition unknown to many.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Where does the word Gaboussis come from and what is its meaning?<\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n

The word Gavousmastia, as it is rendered in Greek, comes from the Turkish word Gavousmak. In Greek it means a meeting, a gathering, a meeting.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

How long will this year’s Gavoosis last and what kind of events are on the agenda?<\/b> <\/span><\/h5>\n

The 22nd Gavoosis is scheduled to take place from 26 to 28 August 2022 in the villages of Farangiana and Apoini. On 26 and 27 August the events will be held at the theatre of Farangiani Kefalas. It is planned to present dances and songs of Cappadocia and to involve choirs from all over Greece. At the same time, there will be parallel actions. There will be a photo exhibition with material from Greek houses of Cappadocia, landscapes and maps. Visitors will taste Cappadocia’s flavours and finally a choreography entitled “Cappadocia – Crete…….the light that unites us” will be performed on stage, which refers to those cultural elements that originated in Cappadocia, have been transferred to Crete and remain to this day. On 28 August 2022, the event will be moved to the neighbouring village of Apoini. After the memorial service, a plenary meeting of presidents will be held to assign the next year’s Gavus. Then a scientific conference will be held with prominent speakers who will refer to the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the difficulties that the refugees faced when they settled in Crete and especially in our villages.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Why was the hinterland of Heraklion Prefecture chosen to host the 22nd Cappadocian Gavoosis?<\/b> <\/span><\/h5>\n

The last Gavoosis was held in Chalkida in August 2019. On the last day of the events, where<\/span> a plenary meeting of the presidents of all the members of the PECS, we put forward the request for the two clubs to organize the 22nd Gavoosa and the plenary meeting of the presidents entrusted us with the organization. We hope to live up to expectations and organize the event with the ambition to combine Cretan hospitality and culture, which comes from our ancestors, the Cappadocians.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the pandemic, no Gavoosis has been held in the last two years. Given the above, do you expect a large turnout this year?<\/b> <\/span><\/h5>\n

<\/span>The messages we are receiving from all over the country are encouraging, as the Cappadocian associations have the desire and the impatience to meet again, after three years. Everyone is waiting for the great moment of the gathering.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

How many clubs and dance societies will participate in this year’s Gavoosis? How many Cappadocians are expected to attend the event?<\/b> <\/span><\/h5>\n

According to the information available to us so far, the number of dance clubs that have notified us of their participation is 12. However, we are expecting more, as the official announcement of the 22nd edition of the event was made only a month ago. We expect over 40 Boards of Directors to attend and Cappadocian participation to exceed 4,000 people.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
