In the UNESCO Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity, there are six monasteries in operation, which will impress you with their architecture, hagiographies, wood-carved temples, but also their collection of religious relics.<\/p>\n

They have a strong Athonite element in the architecture and in the iconography of their churches, which was done by Byzantine and Renaissance painters, monks and priests.<\/p>\n
Besides, the first monks who inhabited this place arrived here from Mount Athos. Climb the 146 steps to the first monastery built here, the Great Meteor, which dominates the largest rock in the area.<\/p>\n

As you ascend, take a breath at the “Stylos of Stagios”, the cave where the founder of the monastery, Athanasios Meteoritis, practiced his exercises. In the heart of Meteora, visit the Varlaam Monastery – an ark of knowledge and historical record.<\/p>\n
