ITA Airways accompanies Pope Leo XIV on his Apostolic Journey to Spain

The flight carrying the Holy Father will depart on June 6 at 8:00 a.m. from Rome Fiumicino, bound for Madrid (Barajas Airport), where it will land at 10:30 a.m.

For the occasion, ITA Airways will use an Airbus A320neo, one of the most advanced and fuel-efficient narrow-body aircraft, capable of delivering exceptional operational, economic, and environmental performance. Overall, the A320neo offers a 20% fuel savings and a reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. Passengers can enjoy the comfort of a cabin with full-LED lighting, larger windows with redesigned frames, and fully integrated window shades.

Representing ITA Airways at Rome Fiumicino Airport on June 6 to welcome the Holy Father aboard will be the Chairman Sandro Pappalardo. Captain Fabio Polloni will oversee the flight and onboard operations; the crew will consist of 10 people – 3 pilots and 7 flight attendants – joined by the ITA Airways team dedicated to special flights. As is customary, representatives of the Italian and international press will travel with Pope Leo XIV alongside the papal delegation.

The ITA Airways team accepts with pride and a sense of responsibility the task of accompanying His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his first Apostolic Journey to Spain. The Holy Father’s renewed trust in the airline confirms the value of this service and renews ITA Airways’ commitment to representing Italian excellence in the skies around the world.
