GREETINGS FROM V.I.GREEKS: Stavros Arnaoutakis, Regional Governor of Crete

Stavros Arnaoutakis | Regional Governor of Crete

The current tourist season confirms that Greece, and Crete in particular, remain at the top of international preferences, serving as the driving force of both the regional and the national economy. However, as the sector’s leading strategic stakeholders point out, the future is no longer determined solely by growth in arrivals. The great challenge for our region lies in safeguarding quality, strengthening the resilience of our destinations, and ensuring that the benefits are distributed fairly across local society and the economy.

Within this framework, the Region of Crete is steadfastly pursuing a course founded on the joining of forces and on meaningful synergies between the public and private sectors. A fundamental prerequisite for sustainable development is the upgrading of public infrastructure, together with a functional and clear spatial planning framework that respects the carrying capacity of each area and avoids blanket regulations that disregard the specific needs of our island and regional communities.

We must place particular emphasis on the people of tourism. Investment in human resources, addressing seasonality and housing challenges, and continuous training are the guarantee for preserving authentic Cretan hospitality. No technology and no artificial intelligence algorithm can ever replace human care and the profound bond that forms between the visitor and our land.

The strong “Crete Brand” is not merely a communication tool; it is an infrastructure of trust, built upon our culture, our natural environment, our unique gastronomy, and our rich agri-food identity. Through the launch of flagship infrastructure projects, such as the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) and the new International Airport at Kastelli, and by leveraging the UNESCO recognition of our Minoan palaces, we are reinforcing and safeguarding our tourism product.

Our goal remains unwavering: to establish Cretan tourism as a model of development for the entire Mediterranean, demonstrating that, through respect for people, the environment, and tradition, we can create lasting value on terms of long-term sustainability.
