Messolonghi was founded in the 130th century by Dalmatian pirates on 3 islands, which were later united. The city of Messolonghi took its name from the Italian phrase “messo langhi” which means “between the lakes”. Built again in the lagoon, one of the most important wetlands between the estuaries of Evinos and Acheloos, it is an important tourist attraction. It played an important role in the history of Greece from the Archaic period, with the three ancient cities that survive (Plevrona, Kalydona and Oiniades) and during the Roman and Byzantine period where aqueducts, baths, churches and monasteries are preserved in very good condition.

A journey to the paradise of taste, to a place that has left the most powerful imprint on the flow of Greek history in Messolonghi. The holy city of Messolonghi, as it was declared in 1837, is a point of
reference to the gastronomic tradition with flavors of excellent quality raw materials from the richest fish production center of our country, the lagoon. The fish production centre is formed between the delta of the Acheloos and Evinos rivers. The three-day excursionists will visit the bays of the lagoon and
will get to know the rich wetland. They will also visit
the “Stefa” production unit, where they will be briefed on Friday
the egg yolk and other products of the undertaking. Of course they will taste the famous egg tarracho of Messolonghi in more gastronomic versions. The impressions of this interesting area are completed by visits to very interesting places:

– Religious Monuments, Metropolitan Churches of St. Spyridon, Holy Monastery of St. Eleousa, Holy Monastery of St. Simeon, Holy Trinity of the Lagoon
– The jewel of the central square of Messolonghi is the Museum of History and Art
– The Costis Palamas Museum, the Trikoupis Museum, the Moschandreou Gallery and the Municipal Gallery
– A short distance from Messolonghi, the imposing complex of baths of the Roman era is preserved.

EXCURSION PROGRAMME

DAY ONE
Wandering through the cobbled streets of the city with the old mansions.
Later, Mesolonghi gastronomy in the city centre.

DAY TWO
Visit to East Klisova. One side of the route, the eastern side, consists of rich reeds, fresh water and different species of birds, accustomed to living in this habitat.
On the contrary, the western side has a shallow water surface, salty or ultra-salty, islands with algae, salt marsh (saltsino). The route combines two different ecosystems, freshwater-lake and saltwater-lake in a small scale of space, giving the observer access to both from the same point, which is rare in a wetland. It has a good lookout that helps by giving the critical height to the
observer. Finally, the lagoon at this location is rich in bird species almost all year round and even large populations of some species.

DAY TUESDAY
Breakfast at the hotel, check out and departure at 09.00.
Boat tour of the lagoon. We approach its islands and the diverse ecosystem that is formed in it, after following the route from Tourlis – Vasiladi – Agios Sostis
(Lighthouse) – Koma-Schinias – Prokopanistos – Panagia Prokopanisiotissa – return to Prokopanistos – stop at Vasiladi on the way back with the possibility of offering ouzo with meze from traditional fishing products of the lagoon – return to the island of Tourlis and board the bus for departure and return.
