Region of Thessaly: Exhibition of PDO and PGI Products from Thessaly’s Land at Syntagma Metro Station in Athens

Dimitris Kouretas: Showcasing the Wealth and Authenticity of Thessaly’s Land

As part of the initiative to highlight the identity of Thessaly’s high-quality products, the Region of Thessaly is organizing a major three-day promotional event in Athens, from January 16 to January 18. The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 16, at 6:30 PM at Syntagma Metro Station. For three days, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to taste delicious and high-quality products offered by 14 Agricultural Cooperatives from Thessaly.

The Region is funding the participation of the 14 agricultural organizations and unions by providing them with exhibition booths. These organizations have submitted applications for the certification of their products as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) or PGI (Protected Geographical Indication). The initiative aims to further promote branded quality products, supporting farmers’ incomes and enhancing the identity of regional produce.

The exhibition will feature tastings, with special preparation stations where products will be cooked and offered to metro users and passersby at Syntagma Square.

“This is a unique initiative that showcases the wealth and authenticity of Thessaly’s land, giving our producers the opportunity to present their work while offering visitors a chance to experience flavors of the highest quality. PDO and PGI products are the ambassadors of our region, proving the strength of local production when combined with knowledge, passion, and respect for nature.

This exhibition is not just a showcase of our products but also a message of extroversion and collaboration. By bringing together producers, traders, and consumers, we build bridges that promote sustainable development and strengthen Thessaly’s competitiveness. As the Region of Thessaly, we support every effort that enhances certification, innovation, and sustainability. I invite everyone to embrace this initiative, support Thessalian products, and contribute to the promotion of our gastronomic and cultural heritage.”

Dimitris Tsetsilas

Deputy Governor for the Primary Sector Dimitris Tsetsilas added:
“The effort led by the Region of Thessaly and Governor Dimitris Kouretas to certify new PDO and PGI products is undoubtedly aimed at the economic sustainability of our producers—but it goes beyond that! The cooperatives and businesses participating in the exhibition are literally the custodians of our region’s intangible cultural heritage. They are the ones who carry invaluable knowledge and practices regarding food collection, preparation, preservation, and the sustainable utilization of our natural resources. We are proud of our producers and their exceptional products.”
