Stefanos Vasilakis on destination weddings, intimacy, and the art of calm
Interview by Lillian Psylla
Destination weddings are not only about place. They are about rhythm, trust, and emotional presence.
Celebrity hair artist Stefanos Vasilakis has shaped bridal moments across Greece, from the Cyclades to the mainland, combining technical mastery with deep sensitivity. With a background built on experience, intuition, and long-lasting relationships with his brides, he speaks about hair not as styling, but as memory in the making.

Having worked in destination weddings across different parts of Greece, how do you personally experience the journey of each wedding? In what way does place influence both your experience and your connection with the bride?
I have always been in love with hair — for as long as I can remember. Through my experiences over all these years, the knowledge I have gained, and the many different people I have worked with, this love has grown even stronger. I may have done everything with hair, but for me every woman is unique, and I dedicate myself each time as if it were the first. I want every woman who trusts me on her wedding day — one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful day of her life — to have the hair she dreamed of, and something even more beautiful.
“For me, every woman is unique, and I dedicate myself each time as if it were the first.”
In destination weddings, the bride is often far from her familiar environment. What do you believe is the role of the hair artist in helping her feel safe, calm, and emotionally connected in the moments before the ceremony?
Of course the destination can influence things, just like the time of the wedding or whether the bride will have one hairstyle for the ceremony and another for the party. And of course, if the wedding is thematic, the influence is even stronger. Above all, however, for me it is always the bride herself and what will bring out the best in her. Whatever we choose to do with her hair, I want it to suit her personality, her features, and her lifestyle. On that day, she should be the best version of herself.
“Above all, for me it is always the bride herself and what will bring out the best in her.”

When a destination wedding in Greece comes to an end, what do you believe stays most strongly in the bride’s memory? How does beauty connect, in your view, with the overall travel experience?
I have so many unforgettable experiences from weddings! I truly feel lucky to have been able to be part of, and to contribute in my own way, to the happy memories of so many people. With many of the brides I have worked with — and there are many — we have stayed in touch, even with some who are on the other side of the world. And with many who are here, we have continued to work together.
One must always be as discreet as necessary, but for me, in human relationships there are no formulas. What matters is to be genuine and to truly want the best for the people who honored you by trusting you at such an important moment of their lives.

On a practical level, what are the key technical elements that are critical for bridal hair to withstand the demands of a destination wedding — climate, duration, photography, and video?
At a practical level, bridal hair for a destination wedding requires absolute adaptability. Greek light is intense and revealing. The climate — heat, humidity, wind — demands excellent preparation and high-quality, long-lasting products. I focus greatly on proper preparation, on techniques that hold beautifully both in photography and video, and on results that last through hours of emotion, embraces, tears, and dancing until dawn.
My goal is not a heavy result, but a luminous, natural bridal look that lasts without losing freshness. And of course, without the bride ever losing her unique identity.
Because at the end of the day, what matters most is not simply that the hair lasts. It is that you feel comfortable.
