Wine the beneficial

by the oenologist Antigoni Karamvali

Wine contributes to our good physical and mental health and is an essential accompaniment to the Mediterranean diet.

Since 2200 BC there are testimonies recommending its use for curing diseases. Hippocrates, Galen and Dioscorides often use it as a medicine.

The polyphenols in wine have antioxidant activity reducing the chances of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases. It works antithrombotic and has anti-inflammatory action.

It helps reduce allergies and slows down the aging of the skin while stimulating memory and helps lipid metabolism.

Its antibiotic action neutralizes some bacteria and works protectively against colds.

‘ the consumption of wine should be done in moderation to enjoy its beneficial effects and should definitely be combined with exercise ‘

It helps digestion and fertility and reduces the chances of Alzheimer’s as it protects the neurons of the brain.

The “French paradox” is further proof of the benefits of wine. While large quantities of saturated fats (cheese and red meat) are consumed in France, however, cardiovascular events are few, thanks to the consumption of red wine, which contains many polyphenols, especially resveratrol.

Of course, the consumption of wine should be done in moderation in order to enjoy its beneficial effects (one glass a day for women and about two glasses for men) and should definitely be combined with exercise.

Cheers, then!
