A significant milestone for Sani Festival: Greece’s first music festival to achieve ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management

For more than three decades, Sani Hill has welcomed some of the greatest names in Greek and international music. With more than 400 concerts and performances, and a loyal audience returning to Halkidiki every summer, Sani Festival has become a defining part of Greece’s summer cultural landscape. This year, it marks another significant milestone, becoming the first music festival in Greece to achieve ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management, certified by TÜV AUSTRIA Hellas.

The ISO 20121 certification covers every aspect of the festival’s planning and delivery, from reducing its environmental impact and using resources more responsibly to ensuring accessibility, safety, and sustainable event management.

At Sani Festival, electricity is sourced entirely from renewable energy through the Sani Energy Community and Sani’s solar installations. Sani is also the first energy-neutral resort in Greece to operate on 100% renewable electricity, with its supply backed by Guarantees of Origin (GOs). Guests can move around the festival by electric vehicles, while digital ticketing helps reduce paper use. Single-use plastics have been eliminated, and water is served in Tetra Pak packaging. These measures are complemented by responsible resource and waste management practices, as well as established procedures for safety and emergency preparedness.

The ISO certification comes at a time when sustainability is moving beyond individual initiatives towards the systematic management of large-scale cultural events. For Sani Festival, this means looking not only at the environmental footprint of an individual concert, but at the entire operation behind the festival.

With ISO 20121 certification, Sani Festival is now placing these practices within an internationally recognised framework for sustainable event management. A first for Greece that puts sustainability at the heart of the festival, while preserving what brings thousands of people to Sani Hill every year: music, culture and the unique connection between great artists and their audiences.
