Municipality of Athens: Major Tree-Planting on Lycabettus Hill

Charis Doukas: “Lycabettus, one of Athens’ most important green lungs, is being revitalized”

The Mayor of Athens, Charis Doukas, participated in a large tree-planting event held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Lycabettus Hill.

Mr. Doukas stated: “Lycabettus, one of Athens’ most important green lungs, is being revitalized. Together with the Greenery Department of the Municipality of Athens, the non-profit environmental organization We4all, and with the support of AstraZeneca, we planted approximately 700 plants of various species. We are enhancing the greenery in our city, placing the environment at the center of our priorities.”

The Deputy Mayor for Environment and Greenery, Giorgos Apostolopoulos, emphasized: “Another green battle is being won. Lycabettus, which had been neglected for years, is coming back to life. With the collaboration of all social forces, we are giving the city a deep breath of oxygen.”

More than 240 volunteers, as well as employees from the Greenery Department of the Municipality of Athens and AstraZeneca, participated in the initiative. Together, they planted around 700 saplings and shrubs in the area, including pine trees, Judas trees, carob trees, cypresses, wild olive trees, mastic trees, alfalfa, and rosemary. The plants were watered on-site and will be maintained for the next three years by We4all.

This action is one of many planned by the Municipality, aimed at the environmental enhancement of Lycabettus. Over 2,500 new trees are scheduled to be planted within the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with We4all and AstraZeneca in the coming months.
