Mayor H. Doukas: “We want the new Half Marathon route to be embraced by runners of all levels.”
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, and the President of SEGAS, Sofia Sakorafa, met at the Athens City Hall, officially launching the registration process for the 13th Athens Half Marathon, a premier running event held exclusively within the city’s boundaries.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas stated:
“Athens loves sports and has become an international destination for sporting events. Athletes from all over the world choose to participate in the city’s athletic happenings. The city provides a unique backdrop for races, with welcoming and supportive people, typically favorable weather, and ideal conditions for hosting successful events. We aim for this year’s new Half Marathon route, which is faster and more appealing, to be embraced by runners of all levels.”
The President of SEGAS, Sofia Sakorafa, remarked:
“We are at the starting point of the exciting journey of the Half Marathon. SEGAS and the City of Athens have collaborated successfully on this event, now marking its 13th year. Together with the Mayor Haris Doukas and his team, we have ensured that this celebration of sports and culture will delight participants while also showcasing the treasures of Athens’ historic center.”

During their meeting, the Mayor and the SEGAS President discussed the event, its accompanying activities, and their shared initiatives leading up to this year’s Half Marathon. Scheduled for Sunday, March 9, the race is the city’s second-largest running event after the Athens Marathon, featuring 25,000 runners, 3 races, 1,500 volunteers, and 40 historic landmarks.
This year’s Athens Half Marathon promises to be even more appealing to runners. The revised course offers significant changes, eliminating uphill sections and introducing a flatter, more accessible route designed for faster times. Additionally, the new course highlights important historical and cultural landmarks of the city.
Participants can register until February 20. However, if the maximum number of participants for a specific race is reached earlier, registrations for that race will close.
Simultaneously, the National Half Marathon Championship will take place as part of the 13th Athens Half Marathon. The event schedule also includes the OPAP 5km Race and the Family Run Piraeus, a beloved event introducing elementary school children to the magic of running.
