The Jury and the awards of the 6th International Documentary Festival “Beyond Borders” 2021

Distinguished members of the film community will once again make up the Jury Committee of the 6th International Documentary Festival “Beyond Borders”, which will take place from 22 to 29 August on our island.

This year’s jury consists of Klaus EderSecretary General of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), Marianna Economou – President of the Greek Documentary Association, Jean-Christoph CaronDirector PHOENIX, Bruno Chatelin – Film Critic and MaroAnastopoulou – Director.

Please find below the biographies of the members of the Jury Committee.

In the framework of the competition, the Jury of the Festival will award the prizes: Best Historical Documentary, Best Social-Political Documentary and Best Short Documentary – all courtesy of Hellenic Parliament – the award Best Greek Documentary sponsored by CySEC, the Special Award for Mediterranean Friendship, sponsored by EKOME and the Special Odysseus Award, sponsored by the General Secretariat for Hellenism Abroad.

The Festival is organized by the The Hellenic Foundation for Historical Studies (H.I.S.ME.), in collaboration with the Ecrans des Mondes (Paris), under the auspices of S.A. of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and has the support of General Secretariat for Hellenes Abroad (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the Municipality of Megisti, the Embassies of the Australia and USA as well as the the Hellenic Parliament, the General Secretariat for Insular Policy, the Ministry of Culture, the EKOME and the ERT.

Klaus Eder – Secretary General FIPRESCI (President of the Commission)

Klaus Ender was born in 1939 in Augsburg, Germany. He studied German literature at the University of Stuttgart. He worked as a film critic in the mid-1960s, in particular for national radio (‘Bayerischer Rundfunk’) and various film magazines. He has completed writing books on. Between 1986 and 2007 he was program manager of the Munich International Film Festival and consultant for several international film festivals. Since 1987 he has been Secretary General of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).He lives and works in Munich.

 

Marianna Economou – President of the Greek Documentary Association, Director

Marianna Economou is a documentary filmmaker based in Athens. She studied anthropology, photojournalism and film production in London. She directs documentary series for Greek television and creative documentaries produced in Greece and co-produced with European broadcasters such as the BBC, ARTE and YLE.Her films have participated in many international festivals. She has received awards for her documentaries. Her latest documentary, When tomatoes met Wagner, premiered at the Berlinale and has been officially selected in more than 80 festivals worldwide (Visions du Reel, Sydney, DocBarcelona, Docaviv, Sarajevo, etc.). It was Greece’s selection for the 2020 Oscars in the foreign film category. He is a member of the European Film Academy and president of the Greek Documentary Association.

 

Jean-Christoph Caron – Director PHOENIX

Jean-Christoph is head of the documentary department of the German TV station PHOENIX. Several of his films have received national and international film awards, including The Great Crash of Lehman Brothers (German Business Journalism Award 2010), Death Flight Pan AM 103 (Prix Europa 2014), The Oppenheimer Files (Hesse Film Award) 2018) and The Secret Life of James Bond which had a special premiere at the 2020 Cologne Film Festival. His recent works are documentary episodic The Body Language of the Powerful (phoenix 2017-2019) and What If …? concerning alternative history (phoenix 2017-2020). Jean-Christoph creates documentaries that focus on history and science or deeper analyses of the political world. He is currently preparing a documentary on the Cretan resistance and the war crimes of the Germans in Crete.

 

Bruno Chatelin – Film Critic

 

 

Bruno Chatelin, a graduate of the French Business School HEC, started his career in marketing with the biggest international advertising agencies Publicis, DMM Masius and JWT, later became a film distributor, managing major companies in France (Sony, then 20th Century Fox), etc.He has promoted 200 films and has worked closely with the biggest creative talents in the industry. Co-founder of filmfestivals.com in 2000: an online portal for film festivals. He manages the database of 200,000 subscribers of film professionals. He currently manages the marketing company Major Buz Factory. He works as a festival consultant and edits the Best For Fests page, through which he helps guide festival marketing. Bruno is a member of the Jury for the Cezar Awards, the European Film Awards and regularly serves as a Jury member for several International Festivals.

Maro Anastopoulou-Director

She has studied directing in Athens and has made short films and worked as an assistant director and script supervisor. She has completed television productions and documentaries for ERT. She has published articles in the Greek press. She was recently honoured by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) at the 18th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. She was also awarded the Best Director and Best Presentation awards at the 5th International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra, as well as the PRIX GRECDOC D’OR award at the Greek Documentary Festival (GrecDoc) in Paris for her documentary The Signs of Heaven – Whispers of the Sky. Her second documentary 1.000 square meters of Time, premiered at the 22nd International Festival
Thessaloniki Documentary.
