The pioneer in Robotic Gynaecological Surgery Mrs. Vasiliki Hadjirafael, having performed the largest number of robotic gynecological surgeries nationwide from 2006 to date, lists the advantages of using robots in gynecology. The Da Vinci robot is a state-of-the-art laparoscopic tool that the doctor uses when an operation is very difficult and could only be performed laparoscopically through an open incision. With Robotic Laparoscopy the patient experiences rapid recovery, shorter hospital stay, very small incisions with excellent aesthetic result, fewer postoperative complications (hernia, wound infection), minimized pain and less blood loss during surgery. Robotic surgery offers particular advantages in the removal of fibroids as the use of the robot increases the surgeon’s ability to remove large fibroids with very fine movements. The uterus can be stitched in 3 levels with great precision, so that the endometrial cavity is not damaged and there are no fertility problems after the surgery. This is the goal when we operate robotically on endometriosis. With the robot we are able to remove a chocolate cyst or scattered endometriosis in the abdomen with great precision, doubling the chance of having children. Robotic surgery is used to treat the removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) due to bleeding, fibroids or cancer. In these cases, a total hysterectomy is performed with or without the appendages (ovaries or fallopian tubes and lymph nodes if necessary). With the use of the robot, the patient stays in the hospital for 1 day, quickly returns to her daily routine and, most importantly, can start radiation or chemotherapy in time if needed for a complete cure.
