INFO: Paleochora of Aegina, near the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, was the capital of the island at the time of the pirates. It is said that it had 365 churches, as many as the days of the year. However, historically it is reported that there were about fifty. Of these, 33 survive today. The rest were destroyed along with the whole city in the terrible raid of the Turkish pirate Barbarossa in 1537.
