The company “Athens International Airport S.A.” (AIA) was established in 1996, through a partnership between the public and private sectors. AIA is managed and operated as a private sector company, with the Greek State holding 55% of the shares and the remaining 45% held by private parties.
From 2001 to date, AIA has served more than 315 million passengers on more than 3.5 million flights. In 2019, AIA recorded its best historical performance in terms of passenger traffic with 25.57 million passengers. passengers, while the positive momentum continues in 2020.
By offering one of the most innovative and comprehensive incentive programmes to airlines worldwide, AIA ensures the sustainability and growth of domestic and international traffic, while at the same time strategically promoting “destination Athens” through a wide range of partnerships and initiatives. Having been awarded for the second consecutive year as the Best Airport in Europe by the World Airports Council for the high level of service and passenger experience, AIA continues to implement its programme of aesthetic, functional and operational upgrades to the airport’s facilities in 2020.
The AIA has so far won 94 major international awards and prizes. Today, with more than 300 businesses and more than 16,000 employees, the airport community is one of the biggest drivers of growth and employment in Greece.
