Environment and guests at Sani and Sani Resort

An alien-dependent relationship
In order for visitors and residents to care about the environment and appreciate its importance, they need to be able to “experience” nature. Guests at Sani Resort can hike miles of forest trails and swim in some of the cleanest beaches. The hotel company, aware of the importance of protecting nature and the environment, recognizes that its environmental footprint is determined by the daily operations of the entire Sani Resort and other units. Sani Resort believes that protecting the environment is a duty, an obligation and a way of thinking. This is why it has created Sani Green, a framework programme that includes all its ecological initiatives, with the aim of reducing the company’s environmental footprint, specifically in the energy, water and waste sectors, as well as the creation of environmental initiatives in the wider region. Sani Green’s initiatives include, among others: – Collaboration with the Hellenic Ornithological Society for the protection of the wetlands of Sani, – Planting and caring for over 10,000 trees in Kassandra, and – Supporting Arcturus through eco-tours in the forest it co-created, and the sale of the Sani Teddy Bear.

The Sani Green program ensures ecological management Sani Resort, through a series of actions under the Sani Green program, ensures the proper management of its business operations, so that future generations can enjoy nature and benefit from it, while enhancing the holiday philosophy it offers. At Sani Resort, guests can walk kilometres of forest paths through more than 1200 hectares of forest, which are cared for by a dedicated forestry team, as well as swim in some of the cleanest beaches, as certified by the independent Foundation for Environmental Education, which for 15 consecutive years has awarded Sani Resort’s beaches with the Blue Flag distinction for their cleanliness and ecological management. By extending good eco-management to all its daily operations, Sani Resort is committed to continuously improving its performance in the areas of – Energy conservation, – Renewable energy sources, – Water management, – Waste reduction, – Selection of environmentally friendly supplies, as well as – Awareness of environmental issues among employees, guests and the local community.

Some examples of actions
of the Sani Green project:
– Reducing energy consumption through actions such as replacing conventional lamps with fluorescent lamps, installing thermal solar and cogeneration systems
– Recycling of water for garden irrigation and installation of water flow reducers.
– Recycling of paper, glass, tinplate, plastic, burnt oil, batteries, old appliances, ink cartridges and candles.
– Supply of over 60% local vegetables and fruits
– Increasing the use of recycled and certified ecological papers
– Eliminate the use of single-use plastics
– Preparation of a study for the Sani wetland and cooperation with the Hellenic Ornithological Society: – Inventory of birds and implementation of relevant protection measures, such as the installation of artificial islands for nesting endangered species. – Educational actions such as participation in the
Eurobirdwatch and visits to the wetland by local schools in Halki-diki.
– Planting of 10,000 trees in the wider Cassandra area
– Supporting the local community, with initiatives such as:
– Landscaping school yards in the area so that children can play in a greener environment. – Promotion of local groups and customs.
– Free admission to facilities and festivals for young people from the local community.
– Supporting Arcturus through house tours and guided tours of the forest (with 20% of the proceeds going to the organization), as well as the sale of the Sani Teddy Bear, with 100% of the profit going to Arcturus.
– Creation of Sani Animal Rescue with a sterilization and adoption program for stray animals in the area, where dozens of unfortunate animals have found a home in Greece and abroad
– Organisation of environmental training seminars for staff and related manuals

In the framework of Sani Green, a series of ecological events are organized under the title “Sani Eco Days”.

It is a series of events dedicated to nature and the wetlands of Sani where children and adults have the opportunity to have fun with interactive ecological games. Activities take place around the Sani Marina. Visitors can learn: to capture nature through painting and photography, to use recycled and recyclable materials in alternative ways, to attend performances and theatre workshops, to tour the paths of the wetlands of Sani, to march with local bands at Sani Marina, to buy local products from the open-air market.

For these initiatives, the hotel company has been awarded with the international Green Key and Travelife Gold certifications.
