The Top-5 Destinations of Sophia Zacharakis in East Attica

For the last two years, tourism has been her daily “journey”, as from 2021 she will serve as Deputy Minister of Tourism. What else could we ask, then, from Ms. Zacharaki than to reveal to us favorite nearby destinations for spring excursions. What could be closer than East Attica, full of sights and experiences that can satisfy even the most demanding visitor, every season of the year. As she says, “Personally, the area has never ceased to fascinate me and reveals a new aspect to me every time.”

Lavrio – Sounion – Kalyvia

It is one of my most favorite routes. I think, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion does not need much introduction. No matter how many times you visit this place, its energy always evokes the same awe and peace at the same time. And the sunset, as the fiery sun sinks to fade into the endless blue that stretches ahead, is captivating. Continuing on, you meet Lavrion, a living museum for the history of metal mining in our country, with its picturesque fishing harbour and the opportunities for sailing trips in the Aegean Sea and even diving. The route will always bring you eventually to Kalyvia, a “neighborhood” a la old with the famous – not unfairly of course – taverns and several new opportunities for relaxation and recreation.

  1. Nea Makri – Marathon

The area has picked up considerably recently, especially for young people, and I think if you visit you can see why. Ξεχωρίζω την Ιερά Μονή του Αγίου Εφραίμ, μία από τις πιο παλιές και μαρτυρικές μονές της Αττικής. Hidden in the Pentalic, it is a place imbued with an “otherworldly” energy that evokes devotion and serenity. On my way back to the city, I will always take a walk along the pedestrian street, before finally heading towards Marathon. The National Park and Beach of Schinias – Marathon, which is part of the Natura 2000 network, is perhaps the most beautiful, the most unique coastal ecosystem of the basin. Nature at its best!

  1. The “Mesogeia”

Every lover of fine wine, full of taste and smell, has a special place in his heart for the plain of the Mediterranean. I highly recommend a trip to Attica Vineyard – Peania, Koropi, Spata and Markopoulo – for a truly unforgettable wine-tasting journey. And because good wine certainly needs the best gastronomic company, you can be sure that the local cuisine will guarantee it. The only thing you have to take care of is good company and 4-5 hours of freedom. You will definitely enjoy it and will do it again!

  1. Vouliagmeni

The first time I visited it – I remember being invited to a wedding reception of friends – I was impressed that such a rare phenomenon, both from a geological and aesthetic point of view, is really a stone’s throw away from the centre of Athens. Whether one chooses to dive into its brackish waters, enjoying a natural thermal spa experience, or simply enjoy the idyllic scenery while eating as the sun sets and drapes it in gold, Lake Vouliagmeni is a destination we should all visit.

  1. Amphiar[a]eio Oropos

I’ve known Oropos since I was in Amphiareio (or Amphiaraio more correctly). It is one of the oldest archaeological sites preserved in the basin, dedicated to Amphiaraos, one of the Seven of Thebes and a hero who was worshipped as the god of the underworld. Regardless of the history – which for the sake of economy I will omit here, but I suggest you read it before visiting the sanctuary, it is truly one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites. I will only say that as you explore the sanctuary – which was also used as an oracle in antiquity – you are accompanied by the sound of the water flowing, since the waters of a small river also flow to the spot. An ideal one-day trip for those who want to make a difference.
