A ray of light passed through the window of the mountainous traditional mansion, crafted with exquisite skill from stone and wood more than two centuries ago. The walnut floor creaks slightly as you move toward the window to admire the lush slopes filled with dense forests. Across, the roofs of the houses, either covered with slates or adorned with intricate wood-carved details at their edges, narrate stories of the past, like the folk tales once told around the fireplace or in the courtyards and in the stone-paved squares adorned with bas-relief fountains. Children running around in groups and playing with their impromptu toys. Laughter is scattered all around. As if you can still hear them echoing as you walk along the cobblestone paths of Metsovo, a village embraced by Pindus’s mountains. While wandering the serpentine cobbled paths of Pelion, near the sheltered fountains, it’s as if figures “come out” of the past, showing people joining their lives, reconciling, and small talking.

Wherever you go, each traditional Greek home has a unique style but is adorned with the same passion and love that we Greeks have timelessly for “kallos” (beauty). The hosts smile at you and invite you to their traditional table, once laid with white embroidered tablecloths, silver cutlery, like those still made today in Ioannina, and ceramics. Even if women no longer wear their festive attire with silk gold-embroidered shirts, dresses or “vrakes” (breeches), aprons, headbands, and “sigounia”, and men don’t sit comfortably in their fustanellas or “vrakes” (breeches), white shirts, and belts, Greek hospitality remains a unique experience.
