THE NEW STUDENT’S DECALOGUE

Everything you need to know as a first-year student from university registration, to the cost of living, to the fun and facilities you can have to get by
a dream student life.

You enter university and a different life opens up before you. Live your student years because they are unique and will be forever engraved in your memory and in your heart. At the same time, make sure you get as much as you can out of your studies because they will give you the tools for your own bright future after graduation.
Ten things you need to know about your new student life:

1. Registrations are now done online. Through a special application on the website of the Ministry of Education, using the entry details you had when you filled in your computerised form. No additional supporting documents.

2. If the school is in a city other than the one you live in and you don’t qualify to live in a dormitory, then you should look for a house. Start early, because finding a home is extremely difficult because of short-term rentals (Airbnb). Look for advertisements, but read carefully if they are from a private person or a real estate agent. In the case of a real estate agent, you should know that his fee amounts to a rent. Alternatively, you can “take to the streets” and look for advertisements posted on poles and columns or outside buildings. Finding a roommate would be ideal as you can share the costs but be careful who you choose.

3. Good, the house is settled. Time to arm it. Make a list of the basics and find out about offers on student packages.

4. Classes have begun. Find out the schedule and organise your time accordingly. Tour the University and learn about the services it offers. The library will be very useful for you to look for resources for your assignments. Some universities may also have facilities such as a gym or basketball and football pitches, etc.

5. Make friends. Meet freshmen like you but also talk to older students to find out about courses and their level of difficulty, professors, life at the university and/or in the city and other useful information.

6. Many freshmen, at the beginning of their studies, place more emphasis on rest and fun and less on classes. They don’t study and let the first semester
finished, thinking that “I’ll pass it on to the next one”. But years of experience have shown that things do not work out that way at all. Sure, the final exams have tired you mentally, physically and emotionally and you want to take a break, but know that the classes you don’t pass in the first semester will “haunt” you for years to come.

7. That doesn’t mean you won’t have fun. Student life, above all, means years of good times with memories of a lifetime, a relaxed mood and fun to the max. The “key”
is to use and share your time well. This will help you not only to live your student years but also your entire later life.

8. Are you hungry after all that advice? If you are far from home you might consider resorting to ready-made solutions. We suggest you try your cooking skills, which are both cheaper and healthier. Get a cookbook, ask mom for easy recipes. Delicious food doesn’t need complicated techniques and lots of ingredients. You can choose ingredients that don’t need cooking, such as fruits and vegetables, healthy turkey and cheese toast, salads and more. Well, and no pizza or souvlaki every now and then, the world didn’t spoil!

9. Calculate your actual expenses. According to a survey conducted at the Universities of Athens, the cost of living for a student can reach 7,000 euros per year.
per year, of which 3,000 is for household expenses and the rest for food, entertainment, travel, books and other small expenses.

10. Find out about all the benefits you have as a student: reduced tickets for public transport, museums and archaeological sites, offers in shops.

For the student allowance and by registering, look for the special voucher with which you can get a monthly subsidy for low-cost internet connection.
Good start and a good degree!
