Neptune Hotels organized the Annual Beach Cleaning Event

Monday, September 27, 2021: On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Neptune Hotels Resort, Convention Centre & Spa participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Campaign coordinated by HELMEPA. The hotel organized the cleaning of the beach and the seabed of Troulos beach, next to its facilities.

The action was aimed at collecting garbage on the one hand and raising awareness among visitors and staff about the problem of marine litter and its impact on the environment on the other. In conjunction with Neptune Hotels’ ongoing efforts to reduce single-use plastics, as well as highlighting the problem of marine plastic pollution.

The event took place on Monday 27 September with the support of the Silent Explorers diving team. Thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of guests and hotel staff, more than 82 kg of litter was collected and removed from the shore and the seabed. The effort to clean up harmful litter helps to limit the ingestion of microplastics by seabirds, fish and other marine animals, as well as to maintain a beautiful clean beach for hotel guests to enjoy during their holidays.

Neptune Hotels adopts a quote from EU Ambassador to Singapore Iwona Piórko, who states that “Today, we are cleaning the beach in the hope that my daughter can enjoy the same #CleanSea that I remember from my childhood”.
In order to inform the hotel’s young guests about the effects of pollution on the seas, the programme of the Neppi Land children’s club was adapted to the relevant themes. In this context, a mini ecological artwork created by the children was presented and exhibited during the event.

The results from this action confirmed that plastic is the most common material on the coast and that the proportion of microplastics on beaches and seas continues to increase. Furthermore, the seas seem to be negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic, due to the improper disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE) by some people in the environment.

In addition to the above initiatives, Neptune Hotels is implementing specific measures to reduce its consumption of plastic, energy, water, chemicals and waste. It also emphasises its preference for locally sourced products, so that it operates in a way that shows respect for the destination where it is located.
