West (Epirus – Ionian Islands) – OPENING THE PORT OF THE PARAMYTHIOS

Βλέπεις

From the cantinas of the Ionian Islands to the cobbled, picturesque historical centres of Epirus, the neighbourhoods of western Greece enchant with their spectacular views of the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea and the green mountains of Epirus. In the narrow cantinas of Campiello in Corfu, with the spreading laundry hanging like garlands between the balconies and the small squares. In the neighborhoods of Argostoli with its cobblestone streets, the picturesque Lixouri, the cosmopolitan Fiskardo and the beautiful Assos, built among pine trees and cypresses. In Dionysios Solomos Square in Zakynthos and in the picturesque cantinas of Lefkada. In the old town of Ioannina with its cobbled streets and stone-built arcades. In the historic centre of Preveza with the cobbled Saitan, the Tower and the sundial. In the neighborhoods of the historic and heroic Paramythia of Thesprotia with their Byzantine origins.

You are listening

We “travel” with the sounds of mandolins, guitars and violins and the melodic voices of the troubadours that accompany the Ionian serenades, serenades and arekies. Traditional Epirotic songs with clarinet and violins take us to the mountain tops of the Pindos mountain range, where the Greek soul still “beats” in a Levantine way.

Sniff

The smell of the citrus fruits of the continental land blends with that of the pine and fir trees from the slopes of its high mountains. The winter breeze of the Ionian Sea will bring us the scents of alfalfa and the unique Ithakiotiko soap along with rosemary and thyme.

Taste

Epirus and Ionian Islands are famous for their cheeses and excellent wine. We combine and accompany it with fresh fish and seafood from the Ionian and Amvrakikos Gulf, with lentils from Egklouvi, the Corfiot sausage, nouboulos and the “golden fruit” kumquat, sweet onions from Zakynthos, egg tarragon from Preveza, tangerines and kiwis from Arta.

For the holidays we set the table with wild boar salmi from Giannia, Kefalonian “poutrida” (pork with cabbage or cauliflower) and accompany it with Epirus batsaria (spinach pie).

We knead the Zakynthian kouloura, the sweet bread of Christmas and sweeten ourselves with classic baklava and the Zagoriki “spargana” that resemble pancakes.

Αγγίζεις

Western Greece is verdant, with unique places for walking and cycling in forests or next to seas and lagoons. Routes in nature by bike in southern Corfu next to the Korissia lagoon to the cedar forest and in northern Corfu to the Antiniotis lagoon. We follow the marked paths of Fiskardo. We go around the Amvrakikos Gulf by bike or by car. We explore heavenly routes next to the Acheron river and discover green paths in the picturesque villages of Zagorochoria and Tzoumerka.

INFO Epirus, Corfu and Lefkada were a large part of the Despotate of Epirus, a state that emerged from the dissolution of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and which, together with that of Nicaea, contributed to the recovery of Constantinople and the reconstitution of Byzantium. Its founder was Michael Angelos Komnenos Duke. “Remnants” of this despotate are the Angelokastro in Corfu, one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece with an incredible view of the entire island, the Castle of Arta, where during the Revolution of 21 became the place of imprisonment of General Makriyannis and Panagia the Comforter, the church with the innovative dome that “floats” and the built iconostasis.
