Family “rocket”

The second generation of the BMW 2 Active Tourer, which was introduced in 2021, was recently enhanced with plug-in hybrid versions, and we tested the basic range. The main feature of the new model is that hybrid technology is combined with four-wheel drive from the “basic” 225e version of our test car.
As all exterior dimensions in this new generation have been increased, passenger space is extremely comfortable. On the other hand, the 4.386-metre length remains ideal for manoeuvrability in the city and, combined with the large glass surfaces and increased height, ensures excellent visibility. The luggage compartment has a volume of 406 litres and can be expanded to 1,405 litres.

The interior of the BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer is impressive, both in terms of aesthetics and quality. Live Cockpit Plus, with its large driver-facing curved panel incorporating both 10.7 and 10.25-inch screens for the instrument panel and multimedia system, sets the tone for ultimate digitalisation.

Only the absolutely necessary switches are located on the “floating” centre console. But there are several practical cases for various small items.

The thermal engine delivers 136 hp and 230 Nm of torque, while it is paired with a more powerful 109 hp and 247 Nm electric motor for a combined output of 245 hp. The electric motor draws energy from a much larger battery (16.3 vs. 7.6 kWh).

“The versatile body of the new BMW 225e

offers top practicality features

and the new plug-in hybrid powertrain.”

The gearbox remains a 7-speed dual clutch, as is the integration of the electric motor in the rear differential, which creates the conditions for an electrified all-wheel drive.

Although dynamic performance is not the goal, the 225e Active Tourer achieves a time of 6.7 seconds for acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h and a top speed of 195 km/h. Intermediate accelerations are also thunderous, which ensures a large margin of active safety especially when overtaking and in combination with all-wheel drive.

In terms of electric operation, the large battery ensures at least 90 kilometres of pure electric driving in the city, which with careful driving can exceed 100 kilometres. But even with the battery without an electric charge, using the 1.5-litre thermal engine will never require more than 5 – 5.5 litres/100 km, making the model very economical.

The suspension, with MacPherson struts at the front and multiple links at the rear, is particularly comfortable and, unlike the explosive performance, is geared to the comfort of all passengers. This is of course what a family car is all about, but those who are seduced by performance and looking for sporty handling will not be satisfied.

All in all, the BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer is an excellent car without the slightest “grey area” in terms of performance, quality, practicality and comfort.
