Anogia

 

Walk through the neighborhoods of Anogia, full of tradition and glorious history, there in the shadow of Psiloritis, with the wild beauty and the huge imposing heights standing in front of you. Start from the house of the “Archangel of Crete”, the famous lyricist Nikos Xylouris. Head downhill to the Museum of Alkiviadis Skoulas, with wood carvings and paintings by the popular artist of Anogia. Ascend towards the double-aisled arched church of Agios Ioannis the Baptist and the Presentation of the Virgin Mary with its impressive wooden carved iconostasis and the “Paramythia”, as the rare fresco of Panagia Glykofilousa is called. Sounds and mantinades of Cretan “lyra” on your way and authentic Cretans in stevans and black clothes welcoming you in the cafes of the village. Do not refuse to drink with them a raki with meze and taste the delicious antipasti, lamb that is roasted across the street from the taverns of the area.

 

 

Archanes

Be transported to a village that is different in appearance from the rest of Crete but has the same hospitality that characterizes Cretans from all over the island. Just half an hour from Heraklion, discover a pattern of colourful houses with courtyards “flooded” by trees and plants, neoclassical architecture, cobbled squares, Byzantine churches, whitewashed chapels with great history and stone streets leading to archaeological sites from the Minoan era. At its feet, the fertile plain with olive groves and vineyards and in the background the sea. Look for its tradition and history through the Folklore and Archaeological Museum. Visit wineries, climb up to Epano Archanes to learn all about the production of olive oil and taste local delicacies such as grass pies, Cretan salad accompanied by raki.
