Kefalonia – THE “CITY” OF PARADISE

It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, conquered by other peoples, plundered by the terrible pirate Barbarossa and shaken by earthquakes. Ancient sunken cities, green areas, picturesque destinations. Argostoli, with its cobblestone streets and Napier’s garden, the picturesque Lixouri, the cosmopolitan Fiskardo and the beautiful Assos, built among pine trees and cypresses. Tour the wonders of nature, the lake-cave of Melissani, the Cave of Drogarati near Sami and the “mysterious” sinkholes in Agioi Theodoroi.

Kefalonia is considered the “mother” of the Ionian and Athenian cantata. Melodic voices, guitars and ma-dolina resound in Argostoli’s paved commercial pedestrian street by groups of musicians, entertaining passers-by and visitors of the island, while Greek nights with mandolin players are often organized in the taverns of Kefalonia.

“Kefalonia in spring, you have no match on earth”, sang F.Polymeris, obviously having in mind the scents of wild flowers, herbs and blossoming almond trees. The smells of Easter with the glowing flowers and the skewered lamb on Easter Day.

Start your tasty journey in Kefalonia with Riganada. Continue with the Kefalonian pies and the bourbourelia – soup with various legumes. Accompany it with Robo-la wine, produced from grapes on the slopes of Mount Ainos. For breakfast, try strapatsada, a kind of omelette with tomatoes. For dessert enjoy mandolins, mandolata and pastrami or confit.

Make an excursion to the spring nature of the island, on the occasion of the unique Kefalonian Easter, with its special customs, such as the burning of Judas. Follow the signposted paths of Fiskardo, roll along the island’s road network and admire from above its most enchanting beaches, such as Myrtos, Petana, Xi and Kounopetra, near Lixouri, named after a rock in the sea that until 1953 was shaking non-stop.

INFO The Italian traveler Tomazo Porcacci, in 1620 AD, included Kefalonia among the most famous islands of the world, mentioning that in the area of Skala, he could see a sunken city. Nowadays, boats carry divers who want to explore the sunken island of Kakkavia off Skala, which was cantoned by a devastating earthquake in the mid-17th century AD.
