They have a strong Athonite element in the architecture and in the iconography of their churches, which was done by Byzantine and Renaissance painters, monks and priests.

As you ascend, take a breath at the “Stylos of Stagios”, the cave where the founder of the monastery, Athanasios Meteoritis, practiced his exercises. In the heart of Meteora, visit the Varlaam Monastery – an ark of knowledge and historical record.

Choose which bridge you will cross to go up to the Monastery of Roussanou with its brilliant paintings and don’t forget to walk up to the monastery of Agia Triada.
Roussano Monastery
Although it is further away and more inaccessible than the other monasteries, its 140 steps will take you up to a spectacular view you won’t want to miss.
