Médecins du Monde – Greece (MdM – Greece), founded in 1990, is a medical, humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization, member of the International Network of Doctors of the World.
The organisation’s guiding principle is that every human being has the right to humanitarian assistance, regardless of gender, origin, sexual orientation, religion, ideology or political belief.
Accordingly, Médecins du Monde acts on the principles of neutrality and impartiality. They speak openly about the violation of human rights when they themselves become eyewitnesses.
The Mission of Doctors of the World
The first and main mission of Doctors of the World is to provide health care services. Always based on medical experience, Médecins du Monde speaks openly against the obstruction of access to health, against the violation of human rights and human dignity.
Doctors of the World’s long-term goal is to ensure unimpeded access to health and to ensure that it is a basic human right.
With dozens of humanitarian aid missions in Greece and developing countries, Greek doctors, health personnel and technicians volunteer their services.
Reconstruction programmes help local populations to rebuild their country’s health system after an emergency crisis by rebuilding health centres and hospitals, providing pharmaceuticals and medical equipment and training local health workers.
Long-term development programmes aim to provide permanent and long-term solutions to address the long-term consequences of poverty and exclusion (e.g. a homeless shelter).
Since 1996, an Open Polyclinic has been operating on a weekly basis in the main building of MdM, with the aim of providing medical care to vulnerable populations who do not have access to the NHS, whether they are Greeks, refugees, uninsured or destitute.
Many MdM actions are implemented through mobile units that travel throughout Greece to remote areas and socially excluded populations.
Indicatively, MdM recently and in the midst of a pandemic, in response to the needs of those affected after the earthquake in the Elassona region and in cooperation with the local regional and municipal authorities, carried out repeated humanitarian aid missions in order to support with medical care and basic necessities the victims of the recent earthquakes in the region.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted, among other things, the issue of loneliness among the elderly of elderly people.
Older people have had to stay and continue to stay away from their relatives, both because of the restrictive measures and because of fears for their health.
MdM, realizing this need, started to implement the pioneering for the Greek standards, program of the Online Companionship for the Elderly.
In the framework of this project, the online application was created and a tablet device was given to each beneficiary, so that they can connect via video call and communicate with the other members of the team, as well as with the specialized staff of Doctors of the World.
Alongside the above mentioned indicative programmes, Doctors of the World Greece carries out a number of programs both within the country and abroad, aiming to provide medical and other services to marginalized population groups that do not have access to health services and need medical **** care.
