Olga Kefalogianni: Meeting on the fires in Rhodes

An emergency meeting was convened by the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Kefalogiannis, in the presence of the SG Mr. Μ. Flouris, the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organisation Mr. Δ. Frangakis, the President of XEE Mr. Α. Vasilikos, on the subject of the fires on the island of Rhodes.

The message of Ms. Kefalogiannis was clear during the meeting: “Greece and Greek tourism have shown that they can deal effectively with such large and complex crises. The attitude and reaction of the people of Rhodes is admirable, who are an example of solidarity and self-denial. We know well, however, that we have entered a new phase of challenges that require immediate responses. As a Mediterranean country we are facing the effects of climate change and we must respond to all the new challenges that lie ahead of us.”

Ms. Kefalogianni stressed that the crisis management team set up at the Ministry of Tourism has worked effectively and will be further strengthened as it has contributed decisively to the immediate response to the crisis.

Although the crisis is ongoing and subject to caution until the full impact on the affected areas is assessed, there are considerations for the implementation of measures and support mechanisms which are planned and will be announced in a second year.

It is noteworthy that the necessary actions are already being taken for the immediate promotion of the island internationally, as a uniquely beautiful and safe destination, while actions are being planned for the next period, such as the upgraded participation of Rhodes in the international exhibition WTM in London in November.
